My art skills were far from good. Jake had tried teaching me, but in the end, I was better at sketches without details, so that’s what I did now. I started by drawing Nadia, trying to capture her pose and the way her fingers touched something between us. I wrote a few notes on how her face looked, then tried to draw the many shapes I’d seen behind her. They ended up as blurs, but I wasn’t focusing on them. Instead, I kept thinking about the other shape, the thing that had moved. Something was tickling the back of my mind, but I couldn’t put my finger…

It became clear so fast I gripped the pen so hard it dug into my skin. Cursing, I changed my grip and flipped the notepad to a clean page and started to draw.

The thing that had moved behind Nadia had been hard to focus on. Like my eyes wouldn’t land on it, but something had stuck with me. The hands. I hadn’t noticed when I looked at it, but now that my mind was focused elsewhere, I remembered. The hands were brown and elegant and had a ring on one finger. A gold band with two diamonds and a sapphire. The shape had been too far away for me to have been able to see that detail clearly, but I trusted my luck, and it was telling me it was the same ring.

It was the same ring Nadia always wore. The heirloom from her grandmother. But the shape had worn the ring on the wrong hand. Nadia always had it on her left hand, but the creature, for it must be a creature, a spirit, wore it on the right.

I flipped the pieces of paper back and forth, looking at the small circle I’d drawn around the two sets of hands. Nadia had still worn her ring in the vision, so how could the creature wear it as well?

As I tried to figure this out, something else about the shape came to me. It had hair. I turned back to the original drawing and hurriedly drew on the shape of dark bangs and hair falling past shoulders I hadn’t seen but guessed where there.

When I was done, I started flipping the pages back and forth again. The hair wasn’t Nadia’s, so where did it come from? Was it the hair of the creature?

A hand touched my shoulder, and I jumped.

“Witch on a cracker,” I cursed and turned to look up at Jake. He was leaning over my shoulder, looking at my drawings. “Find something?”

“Yes,” he took the pieces of paper from me and lay the first one on top, the one with Nadia. “I found that,” he pointed just over Nadia’s shoulder. “That’s the Hall of Mirrors.”

“The what now?”

Jake straightened and went to the counter. He filled the boiler with water and found two bags of tea from a jar on the shelf. The smell of chamomile and lavender rose in the air.

I waited, letting him make the tea and gather himself.
